Dear Parents and Guardians:
School System officials continue to work with others in our community to be proactive about addressing school safety. Last year, incidents involving threatening messages at public and non-public schools in our parish brought serious negative consequences for students and the community. The loss of valuable instructional time for students and decreased work productivity of school personnel at schools where such threats occurred, as well as the time spent by law enforcement officers in investigating and dealing with these matters, were detrimental results of such incidents. Episodes involving threats often cause fear in students, their families, and school employees.
Students involved in such incidents are usually discovered and face possible life-altering penalties through the educational and court systems. School administrators have been joined by law enforcement agencies and the legal system in clearly communicating that threatening messages are serious and will be dealt with as such. The cooperation of parents is essential in helping to get the message across to students that threats, whether intended or not, will not be tolerated. Students just cannot joke about threats and expect that they will not face severe consequences.
A special video has been produced that features representatives from our School System, law enforcement, and the legal community providing important information for students about the seriousness of threats and the negative consequences for students involved in such incidents. Students in grades 6th, 7th, and 8th at Creekside Junior High School will view the short video in the coming weeks, with follow up classroom discussions that are intended to clearly communicate that threats made by written, verbal, physical, electronic, or other means, including jokes and hoaxes of a threatening nature, will not be tolerated. Parents may view the video on our School System web site at www.stpsb.org.
We hope that you will reinforce the important message with your children at home. Please also encourage you child to report any information about threats or students that may cause any potential safety concerns at schools by reporting it to school administrators or calling the CrimeStoppers Safe School Hotline at 1-877-903-7867.
Sincerely,
/s/ Lisa R. Virga
